Stu Ungar was one of the best gin rummy players to ever live. He had a photographic memory and an IQ of 185. I have a great lifelong friend, Eddie Albert, also known as Fast Eddie in the old days in Vegas, or Buzzard, in more recent times in Florida. He was very good friends with Stu in the early 1970s in New York. They both went to Vegas around the same time in the mid to late 70s. Back then Vegas was a hardcore "Mecca" for gamblers. While nowadays you can play free roulette, slots, and even gin rummy online, back then there was no middle ground for gamblers, and you would either leave Vegas a rich man or, more likely, completely broke and with loan sharks chasing after you. There was also less monitoring of casinos manipulating game results (or in other words, cheating), which makes Stu's success in Vegas even more outstanding. I feel it's necessary to mention Stu Ungar when speaking about rummy. May he rest in peace.
